Uniting AgeWell - From Staffing Challenges to Fully Rostered and Improved Care
Uniting AgeWell’s partnership with E4 People
THE ISSUE
“We didn’t have enough RNs on the floor to pass the legal requirements (minutes etc), it was very stressful and managers had to step away from their desk and work on the floor.”
THE SOLUTION
“E4 provided agency nurses on contract bases - 3 months or more (some stayed for as long as 6 months!) - which allowed for continuity of care, allowed contract staff to build good relationships with residents and team, they filled all shifts required and any gaps we had.”
THE RESULT
“We were able to recruit permanent staff whilst E4 provided temporary staff to take off the pressure. It was great, they were compliant and patient outcomes improved drastically.”
THE SITUATION
Uniting AgeWell faced major challenges meeting legal RN requirements, which severely impacted operations, team morale, and resident care. Managers were pulled onto the floor, nurses were
overworked, sick calls increased, and
shifts went unfilled—all leading to declining care quality.
The root cause was a lack of local staff in a highly competitive market, where nurses favoured better-funded acute care facilities. Despite efforts like advertising, recruitment drives, and interviews, Uniting AgeWell in Kings
Meadow, Launceston struggled to attract talent. In one word, their situation was "challenging."
THE RESULTS
Patient outcomes improved significantly, and the team found the temporary staff to be compliant and reliable. While E4 provided temporary nurses, the organisation was able to recruit permanent staff and train new graduates, relieving pressure on their existing team. Now, they're fully staffed, a remarkable turnaround from two years ago.
Mandi Blignault, Facility Manager, expressed her satisfaction by stating she would happily recommend E4 and would not hesitate to seek their help again if needed. Notably, they haven't used agency nurses for months, with E4's contractors being the last group they required, and all rosters are now consistently filled.
WITH E4'S INVOLVEMENT
Continuity through contract nurses
E4 provided agency nurses on a contract basis. This approach ensured continuity of care, allowed the contract staff to build strong relationships with both residents and the internal team, and successfully filed all required shifts, eliminating any staffing gaps.
Enhanced reliability, nurses became key team members
With no sick calls, active involvement in
resident care, thoughtful input, and thorough handovers, the nurses exceeded expectations. Both staff and residents appreciated E4’s contributions, with the Facility Manager noting that E4 "provided more than they bargained for!"
